  Health Education
and Drug Awareness
A Comprehensive School Health approach features a sharing of responsibility among the school, the home and the community. Learning is committed to helping Saskatchewan youth, parents and teachers extend their knowledge base and decision-making skills related to drug use and abuse. The following list of resources has been compiled for that purpose.

Curriculum Connections - Information for Parents/Caregivers

Crystal meth can have devastating results for users, their families, and their communities. Saskatchewan Learning continues to recommend a local liaison committee to coordinate drug awareness and prevention in the school and the community. This committee might consist of parents, students, teachers, health professionals, clergy people, Elders, local school trustees, etc. Research has shown that drug prevention initiatives for youth are most effective if done within the context of school curriculum, supported by the home and the community. The following pages include information about where drug awareness and prevention (e.g., crystal meth) is addressed in the provincial health education curricula.

In Saskatchewan, Health Education is an area of study that must be taught at both the Elementary Level (grades 1-5) and at the Middle Level (grades 6-9). Life Transitions 20, 30 are electives offered at the Secondary Level (grades 10-12). Drug education (including crystal meth) is introduced at the Elementary Level and is further addressed at the Middle and Secondary Levels.  The three following charts describe drug education topics and objectives addressed in grades 1- 12. Each chart includes a brief list of recommended resources of interest to parents and caregivers that may be borrowed from your public library. For a more complete list, check the Recommended Learning Resources section below.
