Native Studies

In collaboration with its education partners, the First Nations and Métis Education Branch has developed and implemented Native Studies 10, 20 and 30. Along with a teacher seconded from the field to write, the First Nations and Métis Education Branch utilizes:

  • A Program Team consisting of department personnel that oversees curriculum development renewal;
  • A Reference Committee consisting of content area specialists from across the province;
  • Members of the Aboriginal Education Provincial Advisory Committee (AEPAC), including an Elder, who also assist in curriculum development/renewal content and process; and,
  • A pool of pilot teachers who field test the curriculum under renewal and provide feedback/suggestions to the seconded writer.

Native Studies 10 was renewed in 2002, Native Studies 20 is currently being renewed; and Native Studies 30 was renewed in 1997. Native Studies 10, 20 and 30 are offered in schools and counted as a Social Sciences credit.
