This short film is set in Ireland. A young girl who is still grieving the death of her mother has dreams of becoming a River Dancer. Her father helps her to capture her dream. In the process, they come to accept the recent death in their family, and they grow closer as a father and daughter. This is a touching, realistic film. It does not include a great deal of dancing, but it addresses the reality of the hard work necessary to make a dream come true.

The book is illustrated with black-and-white photos of Rudolf and his family when he was young, of his ballet roles and with friends over the years. A chart of "Ballet Masters’ Legacy" provides an interesting visual clarification of the origins of the ballet styles still taught today. Duke Ellington was hailed as the "King of the Keys." Most people called his music jazz, but he said it was "the music of my people." During his career, Duke wrote music, played music and painted music with his band’s fine sounds. This video is a tribute to a great man who proudly celebrated the history of African-Americans, from slavery to civil rights struggles. Bright illustrations come alive with swirling notes that flow with the background music in this video version of Andrea and Brian Pinkney’s book. Students will receive a rich lesson in music and musical instruments, black history and biographical information on one of the most influential musicians of the early 20th century. This is an excellent choice for introducing students to musical instruments and to the history of jazz—well worth the cost!
