Handel, Who Knew What He Liked. 1st ed. (Print-Non-Fiction). Anderson, M. T. and Hawkes, Kevin, illus. Candlewick Press (CDS), 2001. unp. ISBN 0-7636-1046-1 ($18.39 hdc.).

The legendary baroque composer Handel is vividly brought to life in this picture-book biography. Throughout his life, George Frideric Handel knew what he liked, and he was never afraid to do what he liked—whether it was smuggling a clavichord into his parents’ attic in Germany, entertaining nobility in Florence, Venice and Rome, producing operas in England or performing the Messiah in Ireland. These events and more are written in an entertaining and witty manner while unobtrusive sidebars explain a variety of musical terminologies. The textured acrylic illustrations add fun and drama to the text. A chronology, a discography and suggestions for further reading are appended. This would be an excellent choice to pair with a selection of Handel’s music.

History of Art. 6th ed. (Print-Non-Fiction). Janson, Anthony F. and Janson, H. W. Prentice Hall Inc. (PRN), 2001. 997 p. ISBN 0-13-019732-7 ($92.60 hdc.).

Although this is a formidable book size-wise, it is one of the most monumental studies of art ever published. The book is divided into four sections—"The Ancient World," "The Middle Ages," "The Renaissance Through the Rococo" and "The Modern World." Timelines, maps and an updated website directory of museums and general art sites, as well as an outstanding bibliography enhance this striking book. There are 1 352 illustrations—865 of them in colour. Many of these images have been added to informative, cross-disciplinary essays that focus mainly on music and theatre, but also on such topics as Greek and Roman mythology, Christian iconography, Western monastic orders and medieval guilds. Although this book is often used as a university text, this extensive resource would be a valuable addition to school libraries for both teacher and student use.

The book also includes information about a companion website that contains an online study guide that corresponds with the text. The site is a comprehensive resource that is organized according to the chapters within the text and features a variety of learning and teaching modules for students and instructors. The website address is www.prenhall.com/janson.
