The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. Expanded & updated ed. (Print-Non-Fiction). Edwards, Betty. Tarcher, Jeremy P., Inc. (CDS), 1999. 291 p. ISBN 0-87477-419-5 ($31.99 hdc.).

It has been over 20 years since Edwards’ original version of Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain was published. In this new edition, Edwards presents her theories with 50 percent new material in 10 fully revised chapters and many more illustrations. Edwards’ premise is that drawing is a "whole skill" much like reading and driving. She claims these skills are perceptual and within the grasp of anyone who can see. Employing Edwards’ exercises, students can retrain their eyes. Over time, the process becomes automatic and before long they can not only draw well but can also access the right side of the brain, where visual information is processed most effectively, to solve other problems. She believes the arts are essential for training specific visual and perceptual ways of thinking. Her explanation of how the brain functions while focused on drawing is one of the most valuable insights for students who read this resource. A glossary of terms and an index are included.
