(CAN, I/M) Told in the first person, this is the story of a young Métis boy's survival and triumph over the poverty and desperation in the reservation system during the 1950s. Called "Monias," a derogatory Cree term referring to his fair complexion, Ironstand endures physical and sexual abuse in his home as well as cruelty at the hands of staff and students at a residential school. Despite his harsh experiences, Ironstand recalls happy memories of youth in activities such as swimming with friends and in the joy inspired by the beauty of the prairies. This is a moving story of one person's coming to terms with personal and social identity.
