On Christmas Eve, a young boy is invited aboard the magical Polar Express on its journey through dark, snowy regions to the North Pole. On the return trip, the youngster realizes sadly that he has lost his gift from Santa, a tiny silver bell. Christmas Day, the boy and his sister discover the bell gift-wrapped under their tree. Although the children marvel at the bell's perfect sound, their parents cannot hear it, and in later years, the sister, too, loses her ability to hear the magical sound of youth.
