The 40 short, varied program excerpts range in length from 90 seconds to 12 minutes. The videos are organized into five thematic groups:

  1. Seeing Ourselves: Media and Representation – Video 1 questions the media's roles and responsibilities in effecting social change.
  2. Selling Images and Values – Video 2 examines issues of persuasion in the media.
  3. Our Constructed Worlds: Media Environments – Video 3 looks at how the media tend to create separate worlds in the pursuit of marketing products and services.
  4. The Global Citizen – Video 4, Part 1 looks at how our political responsibilities are shaped by media influences, and how we respond to these messages.
  5. New and Converging Technologies – Video 4, Part 2 looks at likely future developments of the Information Age, inviting viewers to consider how these technologies may influence the evolution of society.

The teacher's guide offers a brief description of each video excerpt and provides some background information on the issues. Questions, activities, and discussion and research topics are organized into "Before Viewing," "Focus for Viewing," and "After Viewing" sections.

Using techniques of commercial advertisements, six Adbusters and Green Peace video segments and a concluding collection of advertisements, this program attempts to help viewers re-evaluate persuasive techniques. The anti-commercials group urges viewers to end excessive buying, logging, use of vehicles, and obsession with body image. Because the segments are not contextualized, teachers may wish to provide time for discussion following each commercial. Note: Some segments include sensitive content.

The story examines the interactions of six prairie women as they struggle to know more about themselves and their world during the hot, fateful afternoon of an eclipse.

Set in Arkansas during World War II, this novel is useful for discussion of racial and religious prejudice. When a 12-year-old Jewish girl befriends an escaped German prisoner of war, no one but Ruth, the Black family housekeeper, can understand that the girl's only motivation is friendship. The enemy soldier has given her what her parents have never been able to—a feeling of self-worth. As the tragic consequences of her friendship unfold, the girl realizes that she will be able to survive emotionally; she will be sustained by the soldier's gift of friendship and by Ruth's unconditional love.
