Upon the Head of the Goat: A Childhood in Hungary 1939-1944 (Print-Non-Fiction). Siegal, Aranka. Farrar, Straus & Giroux, Inc. (UTP), 1981. 214 p. ISBN 0-374-38059-7 ($23.00 hdc.).
A Newbery Honor book, this is an Auschwitz survivor's story of the gradual Nazi influence on her family in Beregszasz, Hungary from 1939 to 1944. Siegal demonstrates how, even in times of severe deprivation and fear in Beregszasz and later in Auschwitz, friendships flourished and displays of courage were a daily occurrence. Siegal's strongest images are of her mother, who fought to keep the family together and who believed that trying to retain a veneer of normalcy was necessary if the family were to maintain their human dignity.
