Journeys in Science and Silver Burdett & Ginn Science are the two textbook series which Saskatchewan Education has authorized to support the new kindergarten to grade six science curriculum. For ordering information, please refer to the Book Bureau Order Form. As new textbook series become available from publishers they will be evaluated by Saskatchewan Education. New titles to be authorized will be listed in the Textbooks Circular.
Other key resources which have been recommended to support the program include: Keepers of the Earth, Project Wild, SEEDS and Windows on Science. For ordering information, please refer to the title index of this document.
Science: An Information Bulletin for the Elementary Level-Key Resources provides detailed suggestions on how to effectively correlate key resources with the curriculum. Teachers should peruse this publication before venturing into teaching our new science program.
When budgeting for the purchase of key resources and other recommended materials, schools should keep in mind that textbooks represent only one form of support material. It is not always necessary or even advisable to purchase one textbook for every student. Rather, it is more expedient to order only a few textbooks per classroom, thereby freeing funds for a variety of other resources.
To become scientifically literate in this ever-changing "information age", students must be given opportunities to interact with a wide range of current media including kits, video, charts, software and various print forms.
It is hoped that this bibliography will prove to be a useful tool in assisting educators to choose a variety of appropriate materials that will meet the specific needs of their communities.
