SEEDS has been identified as a key resource for supporting elementary science programs in Saskatchewan. Provides student and teacher materials for a four to six week unit of study on energy-related concepts. Designed to help teachers incorporate material into social studies or science curriculum. Activity guides note for each activity: objectives, preparation and instruction time, oral and reading vocabulary, teacher background, core activity, and extensions to activity or enrichment. Student booklets have good colour illustrations and photos, and questions to answer. Professional guide summarizes content of levels. Notes core objectives and skills in energy literacy objectives chart. Discusses integrating SEEDS with elementary science programs. Recommends teaching strategies, lists printed and audiovisual materials found in SEEDS package. Metric measures.

SEEDS Key Concepts:

Level 1 - People and animals need different amounts of energy to do things and they get this energy from food. Machines' energy comes from other sources, such as electricity and gas. Plants use sun and water to grow and plants are the source of our energy. Discusses living/non-living things, food chains, the environment and environmental protection.

Level 2 - Sun is the major source of energy. Natural environments constantly renew their resources while environments made by humans need outside inputs. Wind, water and wood are introduced as renewable sources of energy. The difficulties of using them are also pointed out.

Level 3 - Describes coal, crude oil and natural gas as fossil fuels. Shows methods of extraction, processing, and products produced. Outlines the need to use fossil fuels carefully.

Level 4 - Children classify resources as renewable and non-renewable, and investigate food chains. A solar heater is constructed. Water and wind cycles investigated. The sun's role in producing wood is highlighted. Extraction methods for oil and coal are noted along with their environmental effects.

Level 5 - Energy is heat, light, sound or motion. Students investigate energy as motion, kinetic energy, mass, and potential energy. Concepts are related to creating electricity using water power. Investigates producers, consumers and decomposers in food chains. Explores conversions of fossil fuels to energy and other products. Children think of ways to use energy more wisely and use energy industry by-products.

Level 6 - Highlights energy use in processing, preserving and packaging foods. Investigates garbage disposal methods, reusing waste products. Points out automobile as energy consumer, and asks students to evaluate the use of automobiles. Encourages students to distinquish between needs and wants in reducing energy use.

For further information please refer to Science: An Information Bulletin for the Elementary Level - Key Resources.
