(CAN, I/M) A young Anishinabe boy describes how Mishoomis has taught him to observe the plants and animals of the bush. When Mishoomis becomes too ill to attend the Pow Wow, the boy dances alone for the first time. Afterward, he receives an eagle feather as a sign of the pride his grandfather feels for the young boy. Subtle background shadow figures overlaid with pen and ink drawings make this book visually appealing. Included is a glossary.

(CAN) The book's five parts deal with pre-contact Aboriginal Peoples, early explorers, the fur trade, missionaries working with Aboriginal and Métis Peoples, and the immigration of English and French people. Although the focus is on central and eastern Canada, the book's interesting mix of text, charts, photographs, pictures, boxes presenting different points of view, and general information make it a valuable resource. (CAN) This Bobbie Kalman series provides an interesting approach to dealing with pioneer life that is not specific to time or place. Each page has short, easily read articles or captions with black and white photographs or drawings. Because the content and perspectives are Eurocentric with only occasional reference to Aboriginal or Métis Peoples, other resources would have to be used along with these books.

(CAN) The kit, designed for use with seven- to ten-year-olds, deals with the concepts of scarcity, opportunity cost, consumption, production and interdependence in very concrete ways. It includes a teacher's guide with easy to use suggested activities meant to be integrated with social studies, language arts and mathematics, and 23 pages of student handouts. It also has a video with five 15-minute segments dealing with the concepts indicated above.

Eleanora's Diary: The Journals of a Canadian Pioneer Girl (Print-Non-Fiction). Parry, Caroline. Scholastic Canada Ltd. (SCH), 1994. 219 p. ISBN 0-590-74096-2 ($6.35 pbk.).

(CAN) Written by a girl who immigrated to Canada from England, the journal spans the years from 1833-1840, when Eleanora was between ten and 17. Journal entries are interspersed with explanations and historical information as well as many photographs, maps and sketches. The book provides insights into the life of an upper middle class family of that time. Included are a table of contents and a glossary.

The video deals with the accelerating loss of plant and animal species, and the significance of this trend. The four segments of the video show how the use of drift nets kills sea life indiscriminately, how one Florida man tried to preserve a bay near his home, how poaching in Kenya affects elephant herds, and how the rainforest in Brazil can be preserved.
