Twelve-year-old James is under stress because of his parents' divorce, his mother's long work hours, his father's departure from town, and his responsibility for his younger brother. Although he is a talented drummer, even his work in the school band is slipping, and he misses his father's encouragement and coaching. In spite of the support offered by his band director, who is considering nominating James for a music camp scholarship, he gives in to his feelings of powerlessness, breaks his drum, and yields to pressure from Andy (and the bribe of a new drum) to spend the evening drinking. His actions have disastrous results when, during a fire, his drink-induced sleepiness endangers his little brother. However, with another decisive act, he casts off Andy's influence, takes charge of himself again, and returns the drum that Andy has given him.
