Twelve-year-old Diane wakes up saying that she feels worthless. Ten-year-old Rod scoots from refrigerator to counter in his wheelchair as he makes his special pancakes for his family. Getting to school, in math and movement classes, on the playground, and in class discussion, Rod cheerfully participates, expressing his pleasure at being part of a group that solves problems and offers mutual encouragement. In each situation, however, Diane speaks of her certainty that no one likes her, that she will always be wrong, and that no one wants to hear what she says. Her friends, who hear her unhappy talk, express concern. She invites them to attend an after-school meeting of the "Drug Free Club." There she, Rod, and other members run through a skit they have written about " how the way you feel about yourself can make a big difference in the chances you will use drugs." Rod, whose part calls for the positive statements he has been practising all day, can say "no" to an offer of drugs. Diane, whose part calls for the lines expressing poor self-concept that she has been rehearsing all day, asks for some. Supporting print material is available from Media Group.
