The program aims to reach these youth before they drop out of school and become increasingly involved in alcohol and other drug use, and/or other problems such as depression, suicidal behaviours, aggression, and violence. The fundamental program component is group work, in which social support is exchanged daily between the group leader and the peer group members. An essential component is life-skills training including self-esteem enhancement skills, decision-making skills, personal control skills, and interpersonal communication competencies. The group leader can be a teacher, a counsellor, a school nurse, or a social worker. The program explores the decisions high-risk youth face and the consequences of actions taken based on their decisions.
