Set in the early 1900s, this heartwarming story tells how a 13-year-old farm boy perseveres in his struggle to get and break a wild pony. As Chris works toward this goal, his father dies and his mother remarries out of necessity. The novel describes how his mother and new father gradually grow to love each other and are able to create a "real" family for Chris and his sister.
