This book is divided into seven sections, five of which present a cluster of activities that integrate art and the other subject areas, analogizing and seeking relationships between them. However, the motivating factor in each one is different. Section I is based on the use of two objective interests of children--monsters and constructions. Section II uses two concepts--pattern and camouflage--to investigate linkage between the arts and math, science, poetry, social studies and creative writing. Section III suggests how a material--paper--can be used to integrate curriculum. Section IV is the heart of the book. It discusses the purpose for educating in the arts in three articles: "About Perceiving," "About Learning" and "About Additional Benefits of Learning Through the Arts." Section V blends art and the child's world through basic techniques--drawing, painting and clay. Section VI connects an element of art to allied areas of science and language arts. Section VII considers many of the questions teachers ask about evaluating and exhibiting art and involving parents. It is the intent of the author that the suggested activities will function as "starters, examples, bases for spin-offs, that they will be enlarged, reduced or changed..." Representing two different cultures (the United States and Israel) and two areas of specialization (early childhood play and early childhood policy), Edgar Klugman and Sara Smilansky present a carefully documented work on children's play and its place in the curriculum. The book is a result of an international conference held in 1988 where psychologists, administrators, philosophers, policy makers and educators gathered in an attempt to understand the major reasons for the growing pressure on young children to learn through formalized academic approaches rather than through play, the child's natural means of learning. The contributors include David Elkind, Elliot Eisner, Barbara Bowman, Sharan Lynn Kagan and Doris Fromberg. Each of the 13 chapters has been written from a different perspective and each reflects on a specific facet of thinking and research into children's play. Includes a table of contents and an index.
