Pen-and-ink black dots add shape and detail to the soft pastel illustrations by Craig Brown.

The reader meets Clifford's mother taking a walk on a leash, a guide dog, a rescue dog at the fire station, a sheep dog and a family pet. Clifford, the big red dog, realizes that each member of the family is needed and loved, just as Emily Elizabeth needs and loves him. An enjoyable introduction to the many roles played by dogs.

Readers are invited to guess which animals own several articles of clothing that have been left hanging to dry on a clothesline. The sometimes surprising answers are revealed when the flaps on each page are lifted. The story ends on a playful note as the elephant shocks the other animals with an unexpected bath. Jez Alborough's bright appealing pictures were done in markers.

Graham Percy's full-colour illustrations are fresh and appealing.

Also included is a basic section on art and how it is related to child development. Practical information on how to set up an early childhood art program with individual units for both two- and three-dimensional activities is offered. The final section covers the concept of play.

Part II focuses on infusing a creative approach into various areas of the curriculum. It contains several seasonal and holiday units which offer a wealth of art activities, games, fingerplays, songs and group projects. Crinkleroot, a folksy woodsperson, introduces several birds that one might see in the woods and offers a few ideas for attracting birds. Included are several birds commonly seen in Saskatchewan. Although Arnosky's pen-and-ink watercolour illustrations are small and close together, the book could be a valuable resource for students who are interested in birds.
