This environment rating scale is an easy-to-use evaluation instrument that will answer questions about the adequacy of early childhood settings. It has been produced at the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Center at the University of North Carolina with extensive field testing. The 37 items are subdivided as follows: "Personal Care Routines," "Furnishings and Displays for Children", "Language-Reasoning Experiences," "Fine and Gross Motor Activities," "Creative Activities," "Social Development" and "Adult Needs." Full instructions for use are included. This would be a useful resource for administrators.

This unique diagnostic and prescriptive tool was designed to assist early childhood educators in providing individualized programs. It offers guidance for observing children at learning centres and determining their level of development in 22 learning categories. Records of their findings can be correlated to FILE (First Inquiry Learning Experiences), a list of sequenced learning centre activities, for the purpose of helping to plan an ongoing individualized program for each child. Claire and Eleanor grieve deeply, but eventually find some comfort in creating works of art in memory of Grandpa. Diana Engel's ink and watercolour illustrations capture the nature of the relationships and emotions very effectively.

This video program for Kindergarten teachers presents a very easy technique to get Kindergarten students involved in emergent writing and reading in school settings. The technique, spelled out in the video and the accompanying teacher's manual, elicits and models the most common writing behaviours and communicates to children no preference for one over the other. One drawback to this method is that the students spend a lot of time standing in line.

Each video segment is followed by thought-provoking questions designed to spur discussion. Additional discussion questions, as well as role plays and activities which supplement the themes of the video, are provided in the accompanying guide.
