The animals at the zoo are as bored as bored can be so a young boy takes them home with him where, predictably, they cause chaos. The cumulative, rhythmic text is livened by Maryann Kovalski's changing perspectives of the same zoo scene. Her gouache and coloured pencil two-page spread artwork convey a love of life and a humorous connection with reality that is welcome and refreshing.

If one were to spend from noon until night lying in the grass, one might see and hear the parade of creatures portrayed in this simple rhyme. "Crunch, munch, caterpillars lunch" and "pull, tug, ants lug" across the pages in bold stylized collage. Denise Fleming created the unique images for In the Tall, Tall Grass by pouring coloured cotton pulp through hand-cut stencils. Pops, an elderly man who runs a Caribbean island bird hospital, and his young helper, Simon, nurse an injured flamingo back to health. During this process Simon becomes very attached to the bird and has difficulty saying goodbye. Holly Keller used black pen and watercolours to create simple, colourful full-page illustrations and attractive bird borders surrounding the text.

Ita lives in the Massif Des Maures in France. In this mountain area lives a species of turtle known as Hermann or Maures turtle--the only turtle originating from France. The species appeared approximately a million years ago and now is in danger of extinction. Ita experiences a very happy encounter with the turtles.
