Mark and Melanie start school tomorrow and are worried that the bus won't come to bring them home. They prepare for this possibility by gathering everything they might need for a prolonged stay. When the bus arrives, they decide to trust the bus driver and they leave all their things on the sidewalk for their mother to collect. Odile Ouellet's combination of black-and-white and colour illustrations is appealing.

A Winnipeg photographer, David Carey, was inspired to do What's Inside by his two children and their curiosity about how things work. It is a lift-the-flap book in which a Teddy bear uses his magic camera to take black-and-white pictures of the inside and the outside of familiar household items such as a watch, a lightbulb, a piano, a plant, etc.

Children can hunt for the letters of the alphabet and the words that name the corresponding pictures in this whimsical journey from A to Z. Hints are always given about what will appear on the following page. Satoshi Kitamura's humorous, splashy paintings include an octopus playing the piano, a rat writing with a quill and much more.

Through the eyes of a child, we hear about his (and Squeaky, the guinea pig's) first day of school. The children smile and laugh while they are happily engaged in various activities and Squeaky whistles to indicate that he likes it there too. Jenny Williams full-colour illustrations warmly depict this special experience.

Based on the popular song, this rickety old bus picks up an assortment of passengers as it travels around a delightful French town. Sylvie Kantorovitz's full-colour, two-page spread illustrations are lively and amusing. The music is included.

When Eddie goes off to find his Teddy bear that he lost in the dark woods, instead he finds an enormous Teddy that is too big to huddle and cuddle. Then, he encounters a gigantic sobbing bear who is complaining because he can't find his lost Teddy bear, but instead has found one that is much too small for him. They make an exchange and both run home to huddle and cuddle their very own Teddies. The illustrations in this over-sized book are beautifully done by Jez Alborough in watercolour, crayon and pencil. Eddie looks so minute in this densely wooded forest, aptly representing the way a child would probably feel in this situation.

A young farm boy loses his red kite and requests assistance from his older sister in finding it. However, rather than helping, she follows him while chiming poetic verse regarding various hues--e.g., "Well hello, yellow... bright and mellow. Slicker yellow, sunshine yellow, lemonade and daisy yellow..." Eventually, he finds his red kite in spite of this distraction. Keiko Narahashi's attractive paintings present a wonderful array of objects, patterns and colours.

Wickiup, the walkingstick, is very vulnerable after the loggers accidentally spray him when marking trees with orange paint. However, Wickiup manages to solve his problem in a clever way. Elaine Blier's soft illustrations are small, but detailed and attractive.

This program is designed to help children develop a positive sense of self by teaching them strategies to use when frustrated, criticized or faced with challenging situations.
