The Nelson Canadian School Mathematics Dictionary
Numbers and Patterns: Investigating Rate, Ratio, and Proportion
(Print-Non-Fiction). Fyfield, John and Blane, Dudley. ITP Nelson (BB), 1995. 252 p. Order no. BB 7098 ($10.45 pbk.).
(WCP) This dictionary provides a comprehensive list of mathematical terms. Features include cross-referencing, diagrams, pronunciations, word origins, and guidance on usage.
Caution: The conceptual level of the definitions varies widely. This dictionary is most suitable for use as a teacher resource, but may be used with students, as appropriate. Some of the important mathematical term definitions are not present in this dictionary.
Suggested Use: Grade 6 to Grade 9; Student/Teacher Reference
Other Use: Mathematics: 10, 20; Mathematics: A30, B30, C30
(Print-Non-Fiction). Montesanto, Ralph and Zimmer, David. (Constructing Mathematical Concepts Series). DC Heath Canada Limited (BB), 1995. 111 p. Student Resource - Order no. BB 7410 ($17.80 hdc.). Teacher's Guide - Order no. BB 7411 ($26.15 coil-bound).
(CAN, WCP) This resource provides students with inquiry-based hands-on activities to develop an understanding of numbers and patterns. A series of investigations focus on: "Rate," "Ratio," "Proportion," "Using Rate," "and "Ratio and Proportion." Links are made to other subject areas and students are encouraged to record their observations and reflect on their learning. This is a good resource for an investigative/problem-solving strategy, particularly for advanced students in the adaptive dimension. This is an attractive, well-organized book with high mathematical standards.
Teacher Guide:
This book includes teaching notes and strategies, and step-by-step lesson plans. Blackline masters and answers are provided. The guide provides strategies for keeping journals, lead-ins for journals, and a variety of evaluation tools.
Please note that one use of Imperial Measures in a reference to Gulliver's Travels is used in a historical context.
Suggested Use: Grade 7; Ratio, Proportion and Percent
