Exile

(SK) This play unfolds around the visit of two South African women who have not seen each other for 28 years. One of the women has been in exile for all that time and the other undergoes tremendous risks to re-establish contact. While apartheid has been abolished since it was written, the play provides poignant insights into such regimes, particularly for audiences whose own experiences of government and law do not encompass such racist oppression.

Each chapter contains suggestions for discussion and art-making. This book contains no Canadian or Aboriginal content. Included are a table of contents, an index of artists, a glossary, and an index. The set of 30 full-colour transparencies are organized according to chapter. An accompanying instructor's guide contains background information about the artist and additional suggestions for discussion and art-making. The teacher's binder contains reproducible materials related to artists, types of media, and display. This is not recommended for use as a student workbook. It is a teacher resource only. The package of art prints includes 20 full-colour reproductions of works by renowned world artists. No Canadian artists are represented. The 128-page guide contains background information about each work and suggestions for response and extension activity.

While this resource does not contain arts education content specifically, several of the topics could be addressed in conjunction with arts education activities. Included is a table of contents.

Exploring the Connections

(SK) This performance-documentary deals with the process of creating music and dance as inspired from visual art. It takes the viewer through the experience of the artists and students involved while exploring four sub-themes: formal order, political and ideological issues in art, expression of emotion in art, and fantasy. Two dancer/choreographers Dana Verony, and Elaine Hanson along with composer Tom Schudel, developed music and choreography based on the four themes taken from the art exhibition for two new works at the MacKenzie Art Gallery in Regina. Students in Grades 4 to 8 participate in the exploration of the art works that include movement and dance as a way of interpreting what they are seeing and feeling from images.
