I Was Born Here...In Ste. Madeleine

(CAN, I/M) Evicted from their land in the 1930’s, the Métis of Ste. Madeleine in western Manitoba return with their descendants for a commemorative gathering to celebrate the spirit of their former community. This four-part video presents reminiscences of Elders about the settlement of the land, struggle with the federal government over land usage, and present-day life of the former residents' children and grandchildren. A final section shows a Métis square dance with traditional f iddle music and caller. This segment could be used effectively in conjunction with the Métis Dances Kit.

(SK, I/M) This resource has been created in two formats: as an interactive CD-ROM and as a slide kit with accompanying teacher’s guides. The CD-ROM has been produced to work in either a Windows or Mac environment. It offers the works of 100 Cana dian artists including Aboriginal artists. These artists work in the fields of architecture, fine arts, crafts, comic book illustration, and graphic and fashion design. Five virtual reality galleries allow students to move around the rooms as they view and interact with the art works. This innovative CD-ROM contains video and audio interviews with the artists who discuss their work, their ideas, and careers. Students can even visit Saskatchewan artist Joe Fafard’s studio through the use of virtua l reality technology. Each gallery is introduced by two young hosts. They provide the students with a meaningful context for their explorations, research and classroom projects. Interactive activities that promote student’s critical thinking and c ommunication abilities are provided. Teachers can also access the student’s work for evaluation purposes. One copy of this resource has been distributed free of charge to each Saskatchewan high school. Copies are also available for purchase from t he Book Bureau.

(CAN, I/M) From a harsh, rocky shore to a golden prairie field, Images of Nature contains many familiar paintings by the Group of Seven and Tom Thomson--The Jack Pine, Mt. The colourful images will strike a chord in most Canadians, either because the paintings are some of their favourites or because the Canadian landscapes they portray are so remarkable. This program focuses on the works of art created by Vincent van Gogh during his 444 days in the south of France. The film was made on location in the Netherlands and in Provence, using van Gogh's original canvases. The 15 months van Gogh spent in Arl es--from February, 1988 to May, 1989 represent the climax of the artist's career, and one of the most productive periods of any artist.
