Long noted for his literary criticism, Richard Kostelanetz has for over two decades written intelligently about contemporary music in various veins. On Innovative Music(ian)s collects the best of these essays. Several deal at length with such avant-garde composers as Elliott Carter, Milton Babbitt, and, especially, John Cage; others are profiles of musicians such as Glenn Gould, B.B. King, and the author's uncle, André Kostelanetz. Also in the book are the younger Kostelanetz's long essays on contemporary music in general and rock in the 1960's, in addition to thoughts about his own recent work in a kind of new music composition. Included are a table of contents and an index.
