Van Gogh is influenced by the French Impressionists, particularly Camille Pissarro, who serves as his mentor. Learning with other painters Lautrec, Cezanne, Bernard, and Gauguin, van Gogh trains himself by a method he calls "gymnastic exercises with colour," in which he notes the contrasting and complementary nature of colours. His experiments with the effect of light on colour are seen in his landscapes and floral still life, as well as the self-portraits done during this period. At the same time, he becomes aware of the art of Japanese prints and attempts to incorporate that style into his work. Supporting print material is available from the Book Bureau.

He becomes familiar with the paintings of Millet, which inspire his interest in the peasant genre of art. He is tutored by Anton Mauve of The Hague school, who influences van Gogh to go outside and observe and paint live models. He paints the miners, weavers, and peasants he observes around him. Supporting print material is available at the Book Bureau.

In 1888 van Gogh moves to Arles in southern France and continues his odyssey into genius and madness. There and in Saint-Remy and Auvers, he creates his most important work: Starry Night, Portrait of Dr. Gachet, The Postman Roulin, and The Night Cafe, as well as his distinctively possessed landscapes. He moves from the impressionist style to expressionism in which he pours out all his feeling on canvas. Using intense colour and slashing brush strokes, van Gogh’s view of the world reflects his alternately depressed and violent states, attributed after his death to epilepsy. Supporting print material is available from the Book Bureau.
