Four men and four women, who are scientists, engineers and agriculturists, are sealed inside one of the most extraordinary structures ever conceived: Biosphere 2. Emulating the Earth itself (Biosphere 1), Biosphere 2 is by far the largest self-sustaining ecosystem ever built, containing under its three-acre glass-domed complex a rainforest, a savannah, a marsh, an ocean, a desert, a farm and a "Microcity"--with 3,800 species of plant and animal inhabitants. What is learned in Biosphere 2 may help us understand more about life on Earth, and to manage Earth's resources better. It may also lay the ground work for creating self-sustaining environments for space travel and colonization. John Allen, one of Biosphere 2's visionary founders, explains the genesis of the project and chronicles its evolution and development over the past six years.
