DNA: Laboratory of Life (Videotape). National Geographic (NGS), 1985. 21 min. Order No. C51048 ($107.55)

An excellent simulation of the DNA structure is provided. The connection between pure research and technological advances is shown. There is a bias in the presentation toward regulating genetic engineering.

The Dancing Wu Li Masters: An Overview of the New Physics (Print-Non-Fiction). Zukav, Gary. Bantam Books (BAN), 1979. 305 p. ISBN 0-553-26382-X ($6.95 pbk.)

Zukav has written an easy to read guide for those who are curious about the mind-expanding discoveries of advanced physics, but who have no scientific background. Non-mathematical explanations are used. It is highly recommended for all adults to read. This book mainly attempts to teach readers a new paradigm for perceiving various phenomena. Zukav uses a historical development to prepare the reader for the eventual presentation. The DSLs of the Nature of Science, Processes of Science, STSE Interrelationships and Values that Underlie Science are supported.

Deforestation & "Development" (Print-Non-Fiction). Schneider, Aaron, ed. Centre for International Studies (UCC), 1989. 251 p. ISBN 0-920336-21-3 ($19.95 pbk.)

In this highly recommended resource the biological, social and economic consequences of deforestation are given in a world context. There is great detail on Canada's current trend of deforestation with 250 pages of thought provoking articles. Included are a table of contents and a bibliography.

The Digestive System (Print-Non-Fiction). Avraham, Regina. (The Encyclopedia of Health - The Healthy Body). Chelsea House (NEL), 1990. 99 p. ISBN 0-7910-0015-X ($24.99 hdc.)

The digestive process is examined from the viewpoint of historical medical discoveries, the role of nutrients in the body, the process of digestion and the role of various organs, digestive disorders and their treatments. A general treatment of the subject is given; an in-depth analysis is not present. The emphasis in the material seems to be on promoting lifestyle changes in individuals that encourage `good health'. The material supports Key Science Concepts as it provides a factual account of the structure and function of the human digestive system. Support is also given for STSE Interrelationships and Values that Underlie Science as it touches on technological and medical advances.

DNA: The Thread of Life (Print-Non-Fiction). Wilcox, Frank H. (Discovery Series). Lerner (GRO), 1988. 80 p. ISBN 0-8225-1584-9 ($16.50 hdc.)

This is a simple, clearly written account of the functions of DNA in organisms and its place in the cell. The material could be useful for review or as remedial reading.

The Double Helix: A Personal Account of the Discovery of the Structure of DNA

(Print-Non-Fiction). Watson, James D. New American Library (PBC), 1968. 143 p.

ISBN 0-451-62787-3 ($6.99 pbk.)

James Watson writes a personal account of how the structure of the DNA molecule was developed. The author gives an insight into the Processes of Science and the process of model building occurring in this historic example. This excellent account destroys many of the myths around "how scientists work".

Drinking Water Hazards (Print-Non-Fiction). Stewart, John Cary. Envirographics (ENV), 1990.

323 p. ISBN 0-943163-16-1 ($21.95 hdc.) ISBN 0-943163-15-3 ($14.95 pbk.)

This is a good resource for students who want to do an in-depth analysis or description of water chemistry. It summarizes water's importance to the earth and details pollutants in water. Suggestions on how water can be tested and treated for all pollutants are made. Caution is advised in use of some glossary definitions. Included are a table of contents, glossary, bibliography and an index.
