Ecology and Our Endangered Life - Support Systems (Print-Non-Fiction). Odum, Eugene P. Sinauer (SAIP), 1989. 283 p. ISBN 0-87893-635-1 ($17.95 pbk.)

For a teacher of Biology 20 with little background on ecology, this is an excellent resource. It would also serve well for students who are good readers and want an explanation in another style from their

textbook. This book is a revision of the author's university level ecology textbook, written to communicate the issues of the environment to the public. This resource provides support for the DSLs.

The Economics of Wild Rice Farming in Northern Saskatchewan (Print-Non-Fiction). Saskatchewan Agriculture Soils & Crops Branch (SAAF), 1989. (Free of charge)

A half-page written overview and numerous colourful graphs comprise the brochure. This analysis is intended to provide wild rice growers with a good understanding of the capital costs for production as well as an idea of the revenue that could result from the operation. The model estimates the break-even cost of production. It should not be used to predict the economic size of a family farm.

Note: Imperial units have been retained in this report since these are still widely used in the region.

Suggested Use: BIO 20 - Agricultural Botany

While this is an excellent resource about general relativity and current cosmology, it lacks colour and visual stimulation. The topic is exciting, but difficult for all but the elite of physics students. It may be appropriate for enrichment purposes for very advanced physics students in grade 12 or for teacher reference. Included are a table of contents and an index.

The Electric Chemistry Building, Phase I: Inorganic Chemistry; Phase II: Physical Chemistry; Phase III: Organic Chemistry (Software). Snowbird Software (SBS), 1990.

($199.00 each)

System requirements: IBM or compatible, two disk drives, 256K/640K (organic) of memory and a colour graphics card. A colour monitor is preferred.

The Electric Chemistry Building series is a large scale microworld simulation of a group of chemistry laboratories, each representing a major subdivision of inorganic, physical or organic chemistry. The thrust of the learning experience is to have the students move from room to room, utilizing the simulated facilities including chemicals and controllable conditions. The experiments in these explorations may be designed by the students themselves, or assigned by the teacher. The organic chemistry may be somewhat complex for high school students.
