The Facts on File Dictionary of Biology. Rev. ed. (Print-Non-Fiction). Tootill, Elizabeth. Facts on File (CMG), 1988. 326 p. ISBN 0-8160-1865-0 ($15.95 pbk.) ISBN 0-8160-2368-9 ($31.95 hdc.)

The dictionary defines more than 3,000 biological terms and concepts. Some cross referencing of terms is provided. The content appears current and accurate. No pronunciation keys are given. Two column format on a page is used. Some 40 line drawings are used to illustrate. While this is considered a fine resource, this dictionary does not have as many entries, nor as many illustrations

as the Harper Collins Dictionary of Biology. Examples are usually not provided. Both the Facts on File and the Harper Collins dictionaries are superior to A Concise Dictionary of Biology in their use of illustrations and binding.

The Fallacy of Wildlife Conservation (Print-Non-Fiction). Livingston, John A. McClelland and Stewart (MCC), 1981. ISBN 0-7710-5336-3 ($10.95 pbk.)

The premise of this book is that conservation decisions are made on the basis of how valuable resources are to humans rather than on the health of the biosphere. Included is a table of contents.

Suggested Use: BIO 20 - Ecological Organization

Falling Through Air (Software). MacQueen, Ron. MacQueen (RON), 1987.

Contents: Disk, manual $49.95/package (There is a two package price of $79.95 for this title and Coulumb and Millikan)

System Requirements: Apple IIe, 48k, 5 1/4"

This highly recommended software tutorial and simulation helps students describe how an object moves as it falls through air and what forces cause the motion. The strength of the program is its ease of use; the weakness is that students need to know the required formulas before using the program.

Suggested Use: PHYS 30 - Kinematics & Dynamics

Fertile Soil: A Grower's Guide to Organic & Inorganic Fertilizers. 2nd ed. (Print-Non-Fiction). Parnes, Robert. AG Access (AGC), 1990. 190 p. ISBN 0-932857-035 ($39.95 pbk.)

The content is information dealing with fertilizer and soil fertility. It has the "everything you wanted to know about soil" approach. It could be used as a reference as a grower's guide to soil improvement. Included are a table of contents, glossary and an index.

A Fine Science 1985 Series (Videotape). Saskatchewan Education/Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (MHP), 1985. Dup. Order No. V02309-V02321 (Programs 1-13) (BB) BB 5908

($3.35 pbk. teacher's guide)

The series, produced in 1985 and 1986, looks at the state of science and technology in Saskatchewan. A variety of areas is examined--medicine, communications, natural resources,

agriculture, power systems, water management, and pure science research. It is useful for career awareness, and as a link between what the students are learning and their lives in this province. Excellent support for developing the Common Essential Learnings and the Dimensions of Scientific Literacy is given.

Programs are available from Media House Productions for the cost of the videotape plus a nominal duplication charge. Blank tapes may be purchased from Media House for this service or clients may supply their own tapes. Copies of the teacher's guides were sent to each school in 1985 and in 1986. See "Considerations for Acquiring Resources" section in this bibliography for series duplication discount information.

The Flying Circus of Physics With Answers (Print-Non-Fiction). Walker, Jearl. John Wiley & Sons (WIL), 1977. 295 p. ISBN 0-471-02984-X ($25.50 pbk.)

This is a great teacher resource book, in which the author provides an excellent source of ideas for making science relevant to the students and for taking science "out of the laboratory." Stereotype cautions are advised in using the material with students.

Focus on ... Series (Print-Non-Fiction). Alberta Environment (ALB), (Free)

This series, developed in Alberta, is composed of a set of loose leaves on various environmental topics. An overview of each topic is given with a conclusion which speaks of the individuals' responsibility to help reduce environmental problems and also to make their concerns known to the various levels of government. Definitions of terms used are given in the margin. The material may be reproduced for classroom use with proper acknowledgement made to Alberta Environment.

The booklet covers issues which arise within the food production or agriculture industry and society at large such as food safety, chemical use in farming, natural and organic foods, agriculture and the environment, and animal welfare and care. Most of the questions and issues are addressed from both sides with an attempt to inject some scientific and factual information on the various questions and points. This booklet, however, is written mainly from the viewpoint of defending the vast existing infrastructure of agriculture production and food processing in Canada.
