Gaia: The Growth Of An Idea (Print-Non-Fiction). Joseph, Lawrence E. St. Martin's (MCC), 1990. 276 p. ISBN 0-312-04318-X ($27.95 hdc.)
Joseph expounds on the theory of Gaia which proposes that the planet earth is controlled by biological homeostatic forces as opposed to conventional theories which suggest that geophysical forces govern the planet's fate. This idea gives hope for the long term survival of the planet. This book could be used as background information for teacher reference.

Genethics: The Ethics of Engineering Life. Rev. ed. (Print-Non-Fiction). Suzuki, David and Peter Knudtson. Stoddart (STO), 1990. 372 p. ISBN 0-7737-5421-0 ($16.95 pbk.)
This book has three parts: an introduction which discusses the limits of science, five chapters discussing basic genetic principles, and nine chapters that deal with the ethical implications of our current ability to understand and manipulate genes. The last nine chapters deal with several genetic disorders and the dual edge sword of technology. The authors state that this is written from a humanistic moral approach. This is an excellent resource for teachers or for enthusiastic, gifted students looking for resources for special projects. Included are a table of contents, glossary, bibliography and an index.

Global Atlas (Print-Non-Fiction). Draper, Graham. Gage Educational (GAG), 1991. 196 p.
ISBN 0-7715-8170-X ($30.00 pbk.)
A practical purchase, this is a good atlas with many good charts and graphs depicting various aspects of life. There are five major divisions in the atlas covering topics such as earthquakes and volcanoes, climate, ecosystems, renewable resources, non-renewable sources of energy and population patterns. One section is devoted specifically to Canada. Included are a table of contents, glossary and an index. The teacher resource package is useful.

ISBN 0-8403-4659-X ($39.90 teacher's guide)
A good resource book that has many activities that could be used for independent learning, especially for the new Science 10 curriculum. Simulations, test items and labs are included. There is excellent information on alternative energy sources. This material is recommended as a teacher resource rather than a student resource because of its strong American content. The contents include the grand oasis of space, basic energy/resource concepts, growth and population, mineral resources, food, agriculture and population interactions, energy supply and demand, water quantity and quality, resource management and options for the future.

Globe Biology (Print-Non-Fiction). Bernstein, Leonard. Globe Book Company (GMC), 1990. 672 p. ISBN 1-55675-716-6 ($51.88 hdc.)
Two of the major strengths of this material are its grade 7-8 reading level plus the objectives and science process skills at the beginning of each chapter. The activities are simple in design and easy to understand. For use in Science 10, chapters on the chemistry of life and cells plus the units on human biology and human health may be useful. As a textbook for Biology 20/30 there appears to be weakness in the illustrations and the depth of information provided.

Grains and Seeds in Canadian Agriculture (Kit). CN Grain Communications (AGI), 1990. 1 display of grain samples with guide, 1 teacher's guide by AgInsight ($25.00 kit) ($5.00 teacher's guide)
The Grains and Seeds in Canadian Agriculture kit is a sturdy, oversize package consisting of a display board of 40 seed samples such as Durham Wheat, Sweet Clover, Field Peas and Buckwheat; a thirty-three page teacher's guide; and built-in instruction chart and booklet entitled Canadian Agriculture from Sea to Sea. The aim of the package is to help students and teachers recognize Canada's principal grain, oilseed and speciality crop seeds, to learn their uses and where they are produced. The 20-page booklet provides an overview of farming across every province and features coloured maps and graphs of farm income sources. Written by Larry McCullough, a teacher in Fort Qu'Appelle, Saskatchewan, the activities in the teacher's guide integrate language arts, science, mathematics, and social studies. Teachers may duplicate the material for their students. The kits were distributed to all Saskatchewan elementary schools in the fall of 1990. Each school also received a class set of 30 student booklets. This kit can be used in a number of ways, for discussing classification or seed production in elementary level science, for discussing plant reproduction and adaptations in Biology 20, or for raising awareness of all students about the diversity within the agricultural industry in Saskatchewan.
