The Nature of Life. 2nd ed. (Print-Non-Fiction). Postlethwait, John H. and Janet L. Hopson. McGraw-Hill (MHR), 1989. 820 p. ISBN 0-07-050633-7 ($63.95 hdc.)
American perspectives and examples are used in covering the topics. The operation of the cell and the biochemical processes, heredity, a survey of the plant, animal and protist phyla, an analysis of physiological systems in different animals and a discussion of ecological and environmental issues are included. Much emphasis is placed on human physiology with little emphasis being placed on other phyla's members. This book does not go into details of the anatomics of different species such as crayfish, grasshopper and perch which may be found in other texts. This may be useful for physics with a chapter on the body in motion. Included are a table of contents, glossary and an index. References are listed at the end of chapters.

The New Migrations of People: Balancing Control and Compassion. 2nd ed. (Print-Non-Fiction). Tooke, Moyra (ed.). Teacher's Press (TCH), 1987. ($30.00 + 1.50 postage & handling)
Tooke examines issues related to the migration of the human race including the environmental impact, social impact, legal aspects, economic impacts, and global and international issues. File articles would allow an interdisciplinary look at the effects of human migration in today's world. The articles are not directly science-related but are more pertinent to history, economics, or human geography courses. However, it is difficult to discuss immigration and human population problems without an interdisciplinary focus. These articles are most useful as a resource to help biology teachers introduce these issues concerning human migration in a class discussion or to encourage students to deal with these topics in assignments or individual and group projects. The articles provide both an international or global and a Canadian view to the problem.

This is a good book for general interest and for encouraging students to take a look at how science can be used to understand what goes on around us. Concepts from science, especially physics, are used to explain occurences related to sports. Diverse topics such as curveballs, frisbees, nutrition and knee injuries are covered. The editors appear to be observing and describing as well as formulating models. The information supports the Dimensions of Scientific Literacy. This enjoyable book was selected by the American Library Association as a "Best Book for Young Adults." Included are a table of contents and an index.
