An Old Man's Toy (Print-Non-Fiction). Zee, A. Collier Books (MMC), 1990. 272 p.
ISBN 0-02-040915-X ($12.95 pbk.)
This resource is enjoyable and interesting to read. It is a layman's description of general relativity, written in a very humanistic manner. It is a gambol through the history of science and provides a glimpse of the physics of the future. Through the central theme of gravity, Zee is able to introduce many theories in the quantum mechanics of particle physics. His style of writing, using many analogies, brings across many difficult concepts, notably the superstring theory. This is an excellent popular work of wide scope. The level of prerequisite physics knowledge required by the reader would place it at an advanced grade 12 level. Included are a table of contents and an index.

One Body (Software). SUN. (Physics Explorer). Wings for Learning (Sunburst) (SUN), 1991. Order No. 3679-02 ($160.00)
The software is based on the concept of microworlds. The user is in control of developing a microworld where many variables may be controlled. The choice of variables depends on the particular module being used. For instance, the One Body module has a ruler, protractor, velocity tool, force tool, gravity tool and damping coefficient tool. The high degree of user control built into the programs in the Physics Explorer series means the user may change one or more variables at a time to see what effect they will have on the rest of the system. However, this much freedom comes at a price. It would be very easy for a student (or teacher) who is new to this type of software to be overwhelmed by the number of available choices. If too many variables are changed at one time, it becomes almost impossible to develop a sense of what relationships exist among the variables.

One Minute Readings: Issues in Science, Technology and Society (Print-Non-Fiction). Brinckerhoff, Richard F. Addison-Wesley (ADD), 1992. 136 p. ISBN 0-201-23157-3 ($11.71 pbk.)
Brinckerhoff has compiled approximately 80 short and to-the-point articles on issues in the areas of biology, chemistry, physics, earth and space science and social science. The articles could be used as attention grabbers or highlights for lessons. The author proposes that the readers may not be able to find the "right" answers to the questions raised, but the best ones. He encourages the
readers to debate their "best possible" answer with someone whose answer differs from the one they have proposed. There is a strong Science-Technology-Society Interrelationship presentation.

Order Out of Chaos: Man's New Dialogue With Nature (Print-Non-Fiction). Prigogine, Ilya and Isabelle Stengens. Bantam Books (BAN), 1984. 349 p. ISBN 0-553-34363-7 ($15.50 pbk.)
This is a very intense book that challenges the reader to examine the changing views of science and the concept that order and organization can actually arise spontaneously out of disorder and chaos through a process of self-organization. This is considered by some to be an excellent book for teachers to read as a background for the changing views in science and technology. It would not be considered a book for students unless they were keenly interested in the topic. Included are a table of contents and an index.

Our Common Future (Print-Non-Fiction). World Commission on Environment and Development. Oxford University (OUP), 1987. 400 p. ISBN 0-19-282080-X ($14.95 pbk.)
Our Common Future is the culmination of reports presented to The World Commission on Environment and Development, set up as an independent body in 1983 by the United Nations headed by Gro Harlem Brundtland, Prime Minster of Norway. This commission began looking at sustainable development and the sustainable agriculture movement. Included are a table of contents, glossary and an index.

Our Endangered Earth: What We Can Do To Save It (Print-Non-Fiction). Langone, John. Little, Brown (LIT), 1992. 197 p. ISBN 0-316-51415-2 ($20.95 hdc.)
A useful resource for Secondary level to secondary science, this material deals with sensitive issues. It may be considered very general for secondary students, but excellent for Secondary level students or secondary ones in a modified program. It is an introductory reader on the environmental impact of most of the significant forms of pollution such as chemical, noise, air, water, waste and radiation, and the impact of global warming, deforestation, wildlife extinction, poverty and overpopulation and energy. This is a great resource to get students thinking about how these aspects of science affect them in their daily lives. Included are a table of contents, glossary and an index.

Out to Learn: Guidelines and Standards for Outdoor Environmental Education. 2nd ed.
(Print-Non-Fiction). Saskatchewan Outdoor and Environmental Education Association and Saskatchewan Education (SOEEA), 1991. 111 p. No order no. needed ($8.00 pbk.)
This manual provides an administrative guide to planning, organizing and conducting an outdoor environmental education experience for kindergarten to grade 12 students. It focuses on environmental protection, planning, health and safety, and responsibilities of groups and individuals. Specific learning activities which make up the educational program during an outdoor environmental education experience are discussed only briefly within the context of the Common Essential Learnings. A list of community organizations and educational programs is given in an appendix.

Ozone (Print-Non-Fiction). Gay, Kathlyn. (An Impact Book). Franklin Watts (GRO), 1989. 128 p. ISBN 0-531-10777-9 ($17.50 hdc.)
The effects of ozone on the environment are dealt with by the author. Pollution in the lower atmosphere due to ozone, the decrease of ozone in the stratosphere and research techniques used to monitor ozone levels are described. The book is easy to read and informative. One drawback is the reference to U.S. legislation. Included are a table of contents, bibliography and an index.

Ozone Crisis: The 15-year Evolution of a Sudden Global Emergency (Print-Non-Fiction). Roan, Sharon. John Wiley & Sons (WIL), 1990. 1270 p. ISBN 0-471-52823-4 ($13.95 pbk.)
Written by a scientist, this book reflects the author's opinions which show a science bias based on the experimental evidence of a 15-year analysis of the ozone crisis. This is a good resource which covers all of the Dimensions of Scientific Literacy, but emphasizes A, C, D and F.
