Paradise Won: The Struggle for South Moresby (Print-Non-Fiction). May, Elizabeth. McClelland & Stewart (MCC), 1990. 318 p. ISBN 0-7710-5772-5 ($9.98 hdc.)
May presents a behind-the-scene look at the logging controversy in South Morseby, Haida Gwai and the eventual creation of the wilderness park area. The ecological and Aboriginal lobbies versus the forest corporations and government ministries is discussed. This is a controversial, yet what appears to be a well documented, chronology of political and legal actions by both sides.

This is an American resource, but it lists some locations in Canada for job placement. The guide gives employer profiles and descriptions. There is also a classification by opportunities for major fields of study and special interest areas. It would help a high school student interested in pursuing a career in the sciences to see what types of opportunities are available and the type of formal education needed for specific jobs. Ways of gaining experience in the area, such as summer job
placement, internship and co-op study programs are also listed. Application information is given. Included are a table of contents and an index.

Photonics: The New Science of Light (Print-Non-Fiction). Burkig, Valerie C. Enslow (MEA), 1986. 128 p. ISBN 0-89490-107-9 ($29.95 hdc.)
This resource is organized as if it is an essay on light. Students would find it handy for doing reports on specific topics related to light. It does not provide material to help students to develop skills in experimentation and mathematics. The illustrations are not colourful and the dull cloth cover gives the book a 1930s look which may make the resource unattractive to students. Included are a table of contents, glossary, bibliography and an index.

The Physics 12 Handbook: A Student Guide. 2nd ed. (Print-Non-Fiction). Roberts, Michael. LPL Publishers (LPLP), 1992. 224 p. ($11.95 pbk.)
The Physics 12 Handbook was written on the basis of British Columbia's present senior physics curriculum. It contains a wide variety of detailed solutions to physics problems. Many of the comments relating to exams are general, such as those about preparing for a final exam, and are applicable to students in other provinces as well. This edition contains sample final exams with solutions.

Physics for Poets (Print-Non-Fiction). March, Robert H. Contemporary Books (FHW), 1978. 287 p. ISBN 0-8092-55324 ($16.50 pbk.)
March's book is very highly recommended. The title may be misleading. This resource contains a selection of essays on classical and modern physics. The Nature of Science is revealed throughout the book. The theoretical challenges that profoundly influenced physics are described beautifully. This is excellent reading material for the serious physics student.

Physics in Action (Print-Non-Fiction). Dyer, Frank S. and William R. Tallman. Harcourt Brace Jovanovich (BB), 1991. 483 p. BB 1019 ($41.90 hdc.) BB 1020 ($41.90 Teachers resource manual)
One of the strongest features of this resource is that it is very readable for the students with an interesting activity oriented approach. It is particularly strong in providing resource material for optional units. This material would make an excellent introduction to each topic, suitable for teachers without a physics background who must teach physics. This text may not be in depth enough for experienced physics teachers. Included are a table of contents, glossary and index.

The Physics of Dance (Print-Non-Fiction). Laws, Kenneth. Schirmer Books (MMC), 1984. 160 p. ISBN 0-02-873360-6 ($23.75 pbk.)
Laws provides a qualitative analysis of the physics of dance. Important physical principles such as mass, acceleration, centre of gravity, and momentum are considered through this interesting biomechanical application. Technical dance movements such as balancing, jumping, pirouettes, arabesque turns, and fouette turns are analyzed in depth. The physical principles of dance are presented in a clear, conceptual manner. The book is very technical, appealing to serious physics students who have an interest in dance. The book also reveals how physics, and understanding the nature of science, can be extended and applied to human biomechanics. The Dimensions of the Nature of Science, Science-Technology-Society-Environment Interrelationships, the Values that Underlie Science and Science Related Interests and Attitudes are enhanced by this resource. Included are a table of contents, glossaries of dance terms and physics terms and an index.

The authors tell of acid rain, of the damage it is causing the ecosystem and our health, of the staggering costs in not cleaning up the problem, and of decades-long battles to move governments, industry and complacent populations to admit to the problem. Canadian and U.S. maps are used. This is interesting reading and would be a good student and teacher reference. Included are a table of contents and an index.

The material is strong in terms of supporting critical and creative thinking, content and concept mastery, cumulative and summative evaluation, course objectives and in its variety of instructional techniques. This is an easy to read book with student appeal. The text is attractively complemented by pictures and diagrams. Sections such as "Explorations" and "Can You Explain This" would provide strong support for the STSE Dimension. The material is American in content. Included are a table of contents, glossary and an index.
