Responding to a need for improvement in the teaching of science, the authors propose a method utilizing science fiction films to illustrate scientific principles. By using modern technology, such as the VCR, in combination with commentary during the film and structured, post-film discussions, the authors believe that students achieve a better understanding of scientific principles and consequently develop motivation to explore the sciences on their own. The book includes in-depth analyses of the science content of ten films and less detailed discussions of twenty-five others, providing the teacher with all the information necessary for embarking on this approach to science education. The films themselves have not been evaluated by Saskatchewan Education. Included are a table of contents, bibliography and an index.

A variety of topics such as chemical bonding, ecosystems and black holes are developed in a readable manner. Short descriptive passages, but few illustrations and no colour are used. Some of the ideas could be used in preparation of certain lessons. Caution is advised on comments about creationism, p. 243 and the heading "Sex-A Good Idea" p. 235, although the intent of this heading is explained. Included are a table of contents and an index.

Selling Science to Students: A Guide for Frontrunners and Innovators in the Schools
(Print-Non-Fiction). Science World (APES), (Free of charge)
The rationale for developing the Scientists in the Schools and Innovators in the Schools programs in Canada is to place scientists, engineers and other professionals directly in the classroom. It is that believe students become more interested in science when they have a chance to see a real scientist, engineer, technician or technologist in action. This resource is intended to help facilitate such visits to the schools by giving the presenters information on planning and delivering a presentation and doing follow up. Model lesson plans and speaking notes on Canadian scholarship programs are appended. The material covers K-12 presentations. It is available in French and English.
