(CAN) This program promotes exploration of Canadian geography. Using satellite images, narration by members of the Canadian Astronaut Team, video segments, journal articles, and outline map overlays, the program encourages understanding of the relationships among physical geography and natural and societal aspects of life. The program allows users to view landforms and create maps to identify and compare thematic categories such as political features, waterways and wetlands, settlement, wildlife, business and industry, vegetation, and ethnocultural heritage. Using 3-D glasses students can view selected satellite images, print base maps or composite maps, and engage in a fast-paced geography game.

An accompanying teacher’s guide gives background information, suggestions for exploration of each thematic category, answers to the geography game, and reproducible outline maps, as well as lists of Canadian Space Resource Centres and relevant websites.

The CD-ROM contains colour images, text, and audio and video segments that introduce many of the major people, places, and events in Canadian history. Users can access information that includes the story of the Beothuk, aspects of early immigration and exploration, the Halifax explosion, the gold strike near Dawson City, the flag debate, Canada’s centennial celebrations, and brief biographies of several prominent Canadians. Also included is a matching game involving Canada’s prime ministers. The program allows students to archive relevant segments in order to create their own presentations on the internet. Some of the images on the CD-ROM are quite dark.

The guide gives directions for navigation and ideas for class activity.

This video uses footage of castles in contemporary England, as well as models and drawings of castles to chart the development of fortified buildings. The video traces the evolution of the castle from a simple wooden bailey to an impressive stronghold. Included are sections illustrating trades people creating armour for knights and foot soldiers, machinery used in sieges, and modern uses of castles.

The video provides clear, well-illustrated narration that describes the rise of the Byzantine Empire and its eventual overthrow by Muslims, the Islamic influence still seen in Spain, and the reasons for and eventual results of the crusades (e.g., how they encouraged trade and the infusion of new ideas that brought about the Renaissance).

This video studies the Trobriand Islands in New Guinea as an example of syncretism, the process by which one culture adopts a "foreign" practice and integrates it into the home culture. In this case study, the practice is the game of cricket, introduced by the British and the Australians and now adapted by the Trobriands. The lesson shows how the present form of the game reveals political, social, and economic adaptations from Trobriand culture. The video demonstrates how Trobrianders have both changed their culture and, at the same time, retained the attitudes and practices important to them.

Included are a table of contents, colour photographs and illustrations, maps, study questions, fact boxes, primary source material, and an index.
