This program speculates that dependence on intensive agriculture for subsistence has made possible the industrial revolution and modern economic development. Yet the values and premises which have made such rapid growth, change, urbanization, and industrialization possible have also created new problems: overpopulation and massive famine, many forms of pollution, overcrowding, and other problems of the modern city. New psychological and physical ailments plague contemporary citizens; yet in the face of ever-escalating rates of change, we ponder the future.

Grosse Ile Immigration Station, Quebec (Video). (History Lands: Canada's Heritage Sites Series). Good Earth Productions (MGR), 1998. 30 min. Dup. order no. TBA.
(CAN) There are thousands of stories that should be told about Grosse Ile. Its history began in the 1830s, when it became a quarantine station to accommodate the first immigrants to Canada. It is best known as a tragic memorial, because of the 5500 Irish who died there of "ship-fever" at the time of the potato famine. But Grosse Ile is also the story of the birth of modern public health. Innovations were created there that would help stop the spread of deadly 19th century diseases. This island is also the legacy of Canada’s early attitudes to immigration, and the compassion with which the people who died there were treated.
