The Ballad of Crowfoot (10:18 minutes) is a black-and-white production using song and archival footage to provide a haunting, often bitter account of Aboriginal peoples’ encounters with Europeans during the opening of the west.

School in the Bush (15:02 minutes) is narrated by Cree women who present their cultural values and traditions and their reverence for the land. The video illustrates the Cree educational system as integral to daily life, and shows how children learn by working alongside their parents in the bush.

(CAN, I/M) The Aboriginal men and women profiled in this pamphlet fought for Canada in World Wars I and II and the Korean War. They are a sampling of the many Aboriginal citizens who enlisted and the more than 200 Aboriginal Canadians who lost their lives in the wars. Included are brief biographies of Tom Longboat and Saskatchewan’s David Greyeyes and Chief Joe Dreaver. The pamphlet contains numerous black-and-white photographs.

(CAN) This sequel to Nellie L. is a fictionalized account of Nellie Mooney’s experiences in Manitoba during the late 1890s. Working as a school teacher, Nellie sees the ways in which girls’ education is undervalued and how families of alcoholics suffer. As Nellie’s views on issues such as women’s right to vote become solidified during these years, she meets and marries Wes McClung, who values Nellie’s need to voice her own ideas and not act only as a mirror of his views. This is an interesting novel showing the development of Nellie McClung’s views on equal rights for women.

This is a useful introduction to the study of prairie settlement.

(I/M) This video captures the spirit of the annual Mardi Gras Carnival in New Orleans through its music, parades, and costumes. The program examines the origins of the ceremony in the black "Aboriginal" tribes and African heritage of the participants. In the neighbourhood pleasure clubs, members spend much time and money in preparation for each Mardi Gras event. The lesson also considers the complex spiritual, social, and psychological dimensions of Mardi Gras.

(CAN, I/M) In this video, students discuss their experiences as First Nations people, and as immigrants. The teens relate their experiences with racial discrimination, and discuss: changing attitudes toward other cultures, definitions of a Canadian culture, systemic racism, ways to deal with racial comments, and ways in which teens should exert their influence to reduce racism. The video emphasizes the need for individuals to feel safe and comfortable within their community. Some of the students’ views are muffled or recorded at different levels of sound.

An accompanying guide introduces terms, lists questions for discussion or research, and suggests tools for dealing with racism in the community.

(CAN) This world atlas presents detailed information about regions around the world. It contains maps showing physical and political features, environmental concerns, history, ethnicity, resources, vegetation, population, climate, quality of life, and the economy. As well, the atlas illustrates political features of provinces or major regions of Canada and Aboriginal language families. Included are a table of contents and a table of contents by theme, an index, a glossary, an appendix of statistics, and numerous sidebar graphs and charts.

The student activities package is suitable for use in the "Location" unit in Grade 7. It contains activity sheets that focus on basic atlas skills. Some of the activities, used selectively, are useful as an introduction to the atlas or as mini-lessons to study different types of maps. Teachers are advised to use only those pages seen as necessary for the skill development of their students.

World Themes Transparencies includes 16 colour overhead transparencies that illustrate 29 thematic maps and graphs found in the atlas. Accompanying teacher’s notes give suggestions for use of the transparencies to encourage discussion of the relevant concepts and mapping skills.

The guide provides background information and suggestions for student activity.

This resource includes a CD-ROM and guide. The CD-ROM is a simulation about global conflict resolution. It involves decision making by two teams representing neighbouring countries. As the players attempt to build a bridge connecting their countries, they must decide whether to work together collaboratively or competitively. The simulation requires teams to consider national security, sharing resources, and national economics. The game can be played on one computer or over the internet. The guide provides instructions for installation, worksheets for use by players in their roles, and suggestions for extending learning.
