Based on memories from his youth, the author of this picture book relates the courageous actions taken by his father, Chiune Sugihara. Known as the "Japanese Schindler," Sugihara was the Japanese consul to Lithuana during World War II. In defiance of his government, Sugihara issued thousands of visas to help Jewish refugees from Poland escape the Holocaust. This is a moving story of the power of individuals to accomplish significant feats.

This program was filmed in the Solomon Islands where traditional settlement patterns are changing rapidly, particularly on the main island of Guadalcanal. It outlines factors leading to change including population growth, urbanization, and western influence. It is a sample study of a traditional, subsistence rural society changing into an increasingly modernized urban society.
As with many developing nations, the Solomon Islands is experiencing rapid urbanization bringing problems of environmental contamination and housing shortages in urban centres. Overcrowding, particularly in temporary housing camps, leads to health problems and encourages the spread of infectious diseases like malaria.

The novel describes the challenges facing a widow and her young children as they struggle against natural forces such as prairie fires. By illustrating the divergent viewpoints of characters in the novel, this book also personalizes the conflicting concerns of homesteading and Métis families immediately following the Red River Resistance.
