Rights First provides materials designed to involve students in the study of human rights. The journal, activity cards, and teacher’s guide provide ideas for discussion and projects focussing on the history of the United Nations, the rights and freedoms enshrined in the Declaration of Human Rights, and the continuing need for equality of rights worldwide.

(CAN) Set in an Asian fishing village, this picture book explores changing values. When Gang-gang’s parents receive an unexpectedly large payment for their daily catch of fish from the river, Gang-gang realizes the poverty in which his family lives and loses sight of the real source of the family’s livelihood the river. Only after searching vainly for silver coins in the river does Gang-gang notice the silver gleaming on his father’s catch of fish and understand how important the river itself is to his family. Gang-gang tells his parents that he is now old enough to help fish and improve the family’s well-being. The story’s ending is open to several interpretations about what Gang-gang decides constitutes real wealth.

(CAN) This video features the recollections of eight adults who were among the many children evacuated from Britain to Canada during World War II. The people discuss their memories of leaving home and travelling on board ship, their experiences with their surrogate families in Canada, and their re-adjustment upon their return home. This is an emotionally moving video.
