Gang Violence Prevention: Curriculum and Discussion Guide (Print-Non-Fiction). Johnson, Ulric. Sunburst Communications (SUN), 1993. 63 p. Order no. 2555-SG ($59.95).

This curriculum makes gang violence prevention relevant to students’ learning experiences through activities and discussion that raise interest and provoke thought. Through the activities and content, there is an increase in youth awareness of the problem of gang/drug violence and greater depth in understanding of the underlying causes, alternatives to violence and available community resources. It encourages prevention by challenging widely held attitudes and toleration of gang/drug violence and creates opportunities for changing violence-prone and passive behaviours. In addition, it demonstrates skills for violence-free relationships. Included are a table of contents and an index.

Gender Dimensions: Developing Interpersonal Skills in the Classroom (Print-Non-Fiction). Allard, Andrea and Wilson, Jeni. Eleanor Curtain Publishing (BERG), 1995. 149 p. ISBN 1-875327-34-7 ($17.00 pbk.).

Gender Dimensions is a practical resource that assists teachers in creating a learning environment where boys and girls work together with mutual respect and understanding. Issues such as sexist language and harassment, unequal access, and classroom interactions that discourage risk-taking and cooperative problem solving are addressed. Children learn about gender-related behaviour problems and the classroom implications of those problems. They examine their "taken for granted" beliefs about expected masculine and feminine behaviour. The resource provides adaptable activities that bridge across all learning areas using a well-organized and easy-to-use format. Included are a table of contents, a bibliography, and an index.

Getting Better at Getting Along: Conflict Resolution (Kit). Sunburst Communications (SUN), 1992. unp. Order no. 23720A ($114.95 U.S.).

This kit provides an introduction to conflict resolution by demonstrating essential techniques. It shows students that when they express themselves clearly and listen carefully, they improve their ability to solve problems, are able to take greater responsibility for themselves, and become better at getting along in and out of school.

Videotaped dramatic situations, with which most children will identify, set the stage. For example, best friends Lily and Dana have had a misunderstanding that clears up once they really listen to each other; Kyle and Ed’s school project is stalled as they argue about how to do the work, but finally goes forward after they agree to compromise; Peter and Shannon have talked over their problem, but unable to resolve it, turn to a teacher for help.

The brief scenarios generate "What would you do?" questions, giving the children opportunities to practice the newly learned techniques. Student worksheets, posters, a game, an audiocassette of songs, and send-home pages accompany the video.

Suggested Use: Classroom Management; Conflict in Relationships
