I Blew It! Learning From Failure (Video). Sunburst Communications (SUN), 1988. 24 min. Order no. 2252-SG ($169.00).
This video helps students understand that failure is a part of being human. The risk of failure is with us whenever we try something new; it is the price we pay for personal growth. If we attempt to guard ourselves against any and all failures, we are probably not opening ourselves to the new possibilities, new skills, or new personal contacts that life offers us.
I Blew It! also helps students differentiate between failing at an activity and being a failure as a person. One unsuccessful experience, or even a series of them, does not turn a person into a human embodiment of failure. The program does not only look at academic failure but examines a range of endeavours in which students may experience failure. Included are vignettes focussed on athletics, interpersonal relationships, and academics.
A four-step process called the "Four As" is presented to help students manage their failures: Admit that youve failed, Analyze what went wrong, Adjust your actions and attitudes, and Attempt it again. The four-step process is presented in the context of the true-to-life teen vignettes. In each story, the character is shown progressing through the process and using the failure for an opportunity for personal growth. The second half of the program gives students several opportunities to apply what they have learned.
