This comprehensive text looks at all aspects of makeup. The colourful illustrations and layout take the students step-by-step through many procedures. There is a good mix of theory and practical applications. Each chapter has review questions at the end. An index and a glossary are included.

Written at an introductory level, this book may assist students who are thinking about a career in cosmetology. Because the book is American, students would have to supplement the information with Canadian sources. This would be especially true for the areas of training, licensing, and examinations. The section on career possibilities and deciding if cosmetology is the right career choice is universal in its application. The book is illustrated, and has an index and a glossary.

As skin care becomes a bigger industry each year, it is equally important for students to become knowledgeable consumers. This book reviews numerous products from A to Z. There is no index, but the table of contents will quickly lead the user to the proper review of the products that interest them. The reviews of individual products are listed under the company that produces them. Following an overview of the company, each product has a short description and then a product rating of good, poor, or average is used. In addition to the product reviews, there is updated information on skin care, the best products, and a personalized beauty guide.

This comprehensive guide can be an excellent reference for the beginner or the expert. There are sections on colour theory, formulation, application, corrective hair colouring, and management. Within each section are several chapters that look at various procedures in detail. The use of colour photographs and drawings helps to illustrate the various processes being examined. A combined glossary/index is included.

Each two-page spread contains a coloured glamour photo and instructions on how to obtain the look illustrated. The instructions are easy to follow as they contain step-by-step drawings. Some of the areas covered include facial structure, shading, brows, eyes, blush, and foundation powder. In the "Great Looks" section, students can get ideas on how to create various images such as flapper, siren, diva, purist, and the minimalist.

Personal and social skills are stressed, as are issues such as continuing education, tools of the trade, and retailing products. The book is from the United States, but much of the information is practical and applicable in Canada as well. The layout and illustrations will make the book appealing to students. An index is included.
