This is a wonderful, funny story about a pig and a hippopotamus who are neighbours and the best of friends. However, when a hedge is cut between their yards, these friends learn more about each others’ personal activities and idiosyncrasies than they care to know! Eventually, these characters find a means to maintain their friendship and restore their privacy. This book would be suitable to stimulate discussions around such topics as friendship, identifying and expressing feelings, health and hygiene, and resolving conflicts peacefully. The whimsical, colour illustrations by Sally Anne Lambert capture the joys and frustrations of the situation in a heartwarming way.

In this true story, Meaghan, the real-life "Blueberry Eyes," relates her experiences with eye treatment from infancy to her operation for eye muscle surgery at the age of six. It addresses many aspects of eye care such as visiting an ophthalmologist, wearing glasses, wearing eye patches, and undergoing eye surgery. It also touches on the feelings and fears that Meaghan experienced when undergoing eye treatment. Although the book was written specifically for children who need eye treatment and their parents, it could be useful in the classroom for activities and discussions related to eye care. The exquisite, evocative illustrations by Peg Michel capture the varying emotions of the situation in a most effective manner. Included is a glossary.

The very simple text springs to life as Sue Shields’ dazzling watercolour close-ups of chameleons give the impression that a colourfully coated lizard could jump from the pages at any moment! Included is an index, but there is no table of contents.

This is the story of a warm relationship between a young, black niece and her aunt. When Manda feels angry, her Aunt Ruby helps to alleviate Mandy’s strong emotions by making lists of everything that they enjoy in life (e.g., the beautiful colours of juicy fresh fruit all blended together in a big bowl). This touching story could be used to explore such topics as resolving conflicts without violence, expressing feelings, and family relationships. The full-page, colour illustrations by renowned children’s artist James Ransome are outstanding.

Each of Parts Three, Four, and Five offer specific descriptions and examples to inform this decision-making process for a particular age group. These age groups include infants and toddlers, pre-schoolers and kindergartners, and primary grade children, ages six through eight. This kit, consisting of five audiotapes and a well-organized binder of 40 lesson plans, is best used with children in Kindergarten to Grade 3. The 40 lessons are divided into five levels of movement starting with very basic locomotor skills and progressing into more complex movements set to music. Illustrations help to clarify the movement being taught.

Franklin discusses this problem with his parents and they create a solution that helps Franklin to focus on the ways that Franklin and Bear are the same, rather than on how they are different! This would be a very good book to stimulate discussions on children’s fears and excitement as they are starting to lose their temporary teeth. It would also spark discussions on being different and being the same. Brenda Clark’s detailed, richly coloured pictures are most attractive.

Finally, with the help of his mother, Franklin recognizes that what is really bothering him is his friend’s recent move away from the community. When Franklin realizes this, he is able to take positive actions to alleviate his sadness. Brenda Clark’s colourful illustrations are exceptional.

This book would be an excellent spark for discussions about welcoming new students, not judging people by their appearance, and respecting differences. Brenda Clark’s detailed, richly coloured pictures are a treasure.
