Each in her own way has departed radically from mainstream science by incorporating feminism and social activism into her career. Each advocates the reintegration of science and community and of science and citizenship.

It provides a glimpse into the career of a climatologist and offers a dismal long-term forecast for the year 2040. Emphasizing cells as the basic building blocks of all organisms, this segment describes the organization of cells and the formation of tissues, organs, and systems. It concludes with an overview of the organelles and their functions.

This program examines three main activities of the cell: energy storage and release, protein synthesis, and cell reproduction. Viewers take a closer look at important organelles such as mitochondria and cholorplasts, and the roles they play in cell metabolism. They also learn about proteins, amino acids, ribosomes, DNA, RNA, genes, chromosomes, transcription, and translation. Mitosis is clearly defined and illustrated.

It uses realistic 3-D animation, exciting footage of actual surgical procedures, and microphotography to take viewers on a concise and incredible journey through the human body. "The Ultimate Machine" also introduces viewers to how physicians obtain a wealth of information about patients through observation and simple tests.

LabSense: Lab Safety for Science Students (Video). Halifax County - Bedford District School Board (MGR), 1995. 27 min. Dup. order no. V4.

(CAN) LabSense is a science lab safety video suitable for students in Grades 7 to 12. This production introduces students to lab safety principles before they begin their lab program. Segments of LabSense can also be used to reinforce various practices and skills.

Skills such as how to light a bunsen burner, proper chemical smelling techniques, positioning of lab equipment as well as safety conscious attitudes and personal responsibility for safety are stressed. In addition, the use of safety equipment (lab coats, aprons, glasses, eyewash station, fire extinguisher, fire blanket, and others) is explained and demonstrated. Acid and base tests with litmus paper are used to introduce proper cleanup of lab spills.

(CAN) Surfing the Water Web explores various water issues including the hydrologic cycle, stormwater management, water conservation, and an exciting new technology, the Dunkers Flow Balancing System, being developed at the foot of the Scarborough Bluffs in Scarborough, Ontario. Viewers travel to Sweden and meet Karl Dunkers, the inventor of this system. The Dunkers system is unique in Canada and its design and construction have been a multi-year project supported and sponsored by multiple levels of government and the private sector. Graphic animations help explain the processes and systems.

Galdikas, Lydia Phindile Makhubu, Barbara McClintock, Lise Meitner, Rita Levi-Montalcini, R.Rajalakshmi, Katsuko Saruhashi, and Kutlu Aslihan Yener. A few black-and-white illustrations are included.
