Until as recent as the early 1970s old-growth forests of Western North America were largely ignored by science. The enormous trees had been felled for some time for lumber. As the old-growth dwindled scientists were drawn to one particular area, thanks to a friendly, rare bird, the northern spotted owl. Once there, they discovered an ecosystem of staggering dimension, age, and complexity. Scientists over the years continue to learn about how the ancient forest ecosystem functions and feel they are just beginning to grasp the intricacies of these systems.
