(CAN) Covering European history from the enlightenment to World War I, this text provides a critical analysis of the political, social, and economic changes that were occurring. The book is well written, and through the use of many excellent maps and illustrations, it is very user friendly. Some sample questions, analysis, and suggested activities are at the end of each chapter. By including social and cultural history, the text does a good job of bringing history alive. An index, a glossary, and a bibliography are included.

Meltzer surveys the long history of child labour from ancient times to the present, and explores the reasons why children work. Although the examples are focussed on the American perspective, the message is relevant and timely for Canadian students as well. The book includes a table of contents, archival photographs, source notes, and a bibliography. Chapter 14, "What You Need to Know About Teenage Jobs," gives information that may be of interest to students contemplating entering the work force.

Guns and the Lives They Leave Holes In (Video). McNabb and Connolly (MCN), 1995. 17 min. No order number is required. ($150.00).

Produced by high school students, this video looks at the impact of guns on their friends, families, and communities. The program profiles the lives of three people whose lives were forever altered by gun violence.

(CAN) This new edition has substantial additions to reflect the many changes that have occurred during the 1990s. The text overviews the ideas and events during the 20th century. Both current and past governments, in their many forms, are covered. Democratic governments in Sweden, as well as Canada and the United States are examined, as are authoritarian governments. Nationalism is also an area of focus. The second half of the text looks at the economy. Capitalism, communism, a mixed economy, and other systems are covered. The format is well laid out, and its use of sub-headings will assist students. An index and a glossary are included.

There is also a teacher’s resource that contains teaching strategies, suggested activities, and answers to the chapter questions.

Included are discussions on inventions that played a significant role in industrialization; the impact of industrialization on travel, communications, and the lives of factory workers; the rise of labour unions; and the advent of the computer age. The book contains a table of contents, primary source material, black-and-white photographs, information boxes, a chronology, maps, a list of further reading, and an index.
