Here is a book that truly captures all the joy and exuberance of Alexander Calder and his unique art. Calder is a well-known figure in the history of modern sculpture. Each guide features biographies of the artists, visual and cultural notes on the works, references and resources and suggestions for related activities. The program uses legends and storytelling to encourage visualization and self-expression among the students. It also provides cross-curricular links to creative writing, the visual and performing arts, social studies and other subjects.

(SK) Between the Lines presents eight insightful and diverse media projects: "Designing a Public Service Announcement," "Editing the TV News," "Spinning the News," "Ethical Choices," "Creating a Music Video," "Designing a Multimedia Advertising Campaign," "Developing a Soundscape" and "Visual Language." Students are encouraged to expand their repertoire of language skills and strategies through the study of media communication. As the producers, editors and directors, students are given the freedom to create their own thought-provoking media projects using a drag-and-drop interface. The nature of mass media is revealed through video and audio clips and "live" questioning from virtual characters. This two CD-ROM program includes a link to the "Communication Central" website, a glossary of multimedia terms, virtual characters and a customized evaluation component. The two CDs are Windows and MacIntosh compatible.

A comprehensive teacher. s guide may be downloaded from the first disk. Instructions on how to use the resource are given, as well as step-by-step instructions on how to use the units in the classroom for a whole course or for independent study.

(CAN, WCP) Caught in the Net provokes young people to explore the risks of getting too personal on the Internet. Adam reluctantly faces the possibility that a girlfriend he met over the Internet may not be everything she appears to be. He is challenged to think critically and carefully about the many people and sources of information he finds on the Internet. This video should be balanced with information regarding the positive value of peer support groups found on the web.

An excellent teacher. s guide containing valuable information and suggestions for discussion accompanies this video.

This brief biography traces his life from his impoverished childhood in South London, his rise to fame and fortune, his bitter exile in Switzerland during the McCarthy years, to the belated tributes from Hollywood in the 1970s. Comments by authors and critics are intercut with clips from Chaplin. s most popular films.

(SK) This contemporary dance video was created as part of INTEMPCO . 93 . the Highway Project and was produced by Saskatchewan. s New Dance Horizons Company in association with Ironbow First Nations Art Organization. The collaboration involved director Floyd Favel, choreographer/performer Michael Greyeyes, composer/performer Chiyoko Szlavnic and performer Maariu Plsen. The following quotation accompanies the work: "The tree stands experienced, remembering lost youth. Humans are like the tree, given spirit by the wind which moves, joyfully, and falling leaves of innocence."

Cyrano (Video). Globalstage (GST), 1998. 100 min. ISBN 1-892045-00-1 ($27.00 U.S.).

The play Cyrano (based on the original Cyrano de Bergerac) is performed by three actors. The historical and literary significance of the play is discussed as well as a behind-the-scenes look at sound effects. This play is very well done, but teachers should note that only serious drama students would be interested in seeing it in its entirety.

There is a pamphlet for teachers that accompanies the video.

The text consists of 30 chronologically arranged sections that give a good sense of the difficulties Carr faced and the triumphs she achieved. Short accounts of aspects of Emily Carr. s career are accompanied by pertinent illustrations on the facing pages. The focus is on art, with the biographical information used as a background. Many entries use choice quotations from Carr. s own writing. The book concludes with an account of Carr. s influence on later artists and a tribute to her "vibrancy, courage and determination."

The program also assures viewers that Canada. s reputation as "Hollywood North" is well deserved. This means that there is a wealth of opportunities right here at home!

Forty artists and their works are featured on this CD-ROM. Users can examine celebrated paintings by date, type and content to find out exactly how they were created. The 40 key paintings range from medieval religious art through post-Impressionism. Audio, video, text, biographies, timelines and many other features add to the usefulness of this resource.

(CAN) Maud Lewis was disfigured, impoverished and married to a man who "wasn. t exactly Prince Charming," but she produced a torrent of sparkling, joyous paintings. During her lifetime, Maud. s works sold for as little as two dollars each. Today she is Canada. s most famous folk artist. This film tells the story of Maud. s life. from her carefree childhood, to the onset of the rheumatoid arthritis that would cripple her body and gnarl her hands, to the tragic story of the daughter she never knew she had. The beauty and simplicity of the paintings that gave meaning to her life are depicted in this inspiring film.

Users are able to view the underpaintings uncovered by x-rays and raking methods. Six tutorials are included: "Colour," "Composition," "Animation," "Light and Dark," "Hidden Images and Storytelling" and "Special Techniques." The program enables the user to "trace" the works of the Masters in order to understand the elements of shape, line, value and colour. The CD-ROM contains excellent instructions for use and a tutorial with video and audio highlights.

The cultural and historic components of music are dealt with in this text. Each section presents a listening guide for teacher and student, as well as a vocabulary list. Part 1 deals with the elements of music, and the following sections include "Music in the Middle Ages," "Music in the Renaissance," "The Baroque Period," "The Classical Period" and "The Romantic Period." The twentieth century is represented with selections from jazz, the American musical, rock and nonwestern music. Art works by the masters of visual art parallel the musical eras. Several appendices and a comprehensive index are included.

The compact discs help to make this a very useful resource. The musical selections are directly related to concepts and references in the text.

It has been more than 20 years since Edwards. original version of Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain was published. Edwards. premise is that drawing is a "whole skill" much like reading and driving. She claims these skills are perceptual and within the grasp of anyone who can see. Employing Edwards. exercises, students can retrain their eyes. Over time, the process becomes automatic and before long they can not only draw well but can also access the right side of the brain, where visual information is processed most effectively, to solve other problems. She believes the arts are essential for training specific visual and perceptual ways of thinking. Each section begins with an overview of the genre and is followed by alphabetically arranged profiles of musicians from that genre. Portraits and other black-and-white photos of the musicians accompany most entries. Fun facts, historical background and fascinating anecdotes appear in sidebars throughout the volumes. The entries conclude with sections listing awards, further reading sources and contact information. Websites are listed for nearly all the musicians. A thorough subject index for the three-volume set and tables of contents in all three volumes make this an excellent resource for browsing or for research.

(CAN, I/M) Soop on Wheels relates the life and contributions of Everett Soop. Everett is a Blackfoot political cartoonist and humourist who lives on the Blood Aboriginal Reserve in southern Alberta. His survival tools have been a sense of humour, artistic gifts and spiritual values taught to him by his grandparents. He has produced a remarkable body of published work, despite the affliction of muscular dystrophy. Everett is represented in the National Archives of Canada in the permanent collection of the Museum of Caricatures.
