Drawing on Canadian literature and history, Grady shows how certain words reveal key aspects of the Canadian psyche. By understanding these words and what they evoke, we lay claim to Canadian culture and come to better understand our life, language and imagination. The humour contained in the essays requires a mature sophistication that may make it particularly useful in an advanced level class.

(CAN) Sandra Hutchison is a Canadian English professor who spent time in eastern central China teaching. She was evacuated in June 1989 during the government crackdown against student demonstrators in Tiananmen Square and revisited China a year later. Chinese Brushstrokes is a thoughtful collection of essays based on the author. s travel and living experiences in China. The essays themselves are short and readable. Each passage recounts an episode of the author. s interactions with ordinary Chinese people and includes her reflections on these encounters. The book is organized around a series of themes. religion and faith, politics, dreams and aspirations, social relations, village life and the arts. Because it is not a chronological account of her travels, the book tends to jump back and forth between different points in time. However, each essay portrays a realistic picture of the Chinese people and provides valuable universal insights into the human condition.

The 17 essays collected in this resource are intended to speak to the questions all educators have asked at one time or another: Should there be frequent evaluation of student writing, or are teachers even capable of evaluating writing? These essays represent a variety of approaches to evaluation, but underlying all of them are some common beliefs about what is fundamentally important to the teaching of writing. The essays assume that teachers need to distinguish between assessment and evaluation, develop the ability to describe students. writing, connect teaching and evaluation and continually re-examine the assumptions and practices that guide the evaluation of student writing. Although the examples contained in this text are largely American in content, Saskatchewan teachers will find good examples of secondary school students. writing and background information regarding the evaluation of writing. (CAN) News of a gold strike on the Klondike River in the Yukon sparked thousands of people from all over the world to abandon their lives in the south and head north. Writers, too, joined the rush for gold. In Great Tales of the Yukon, Ted Stone presents the 1898 Klondike strike in authentic period style, recounted by people who were there. Some of them (Jack London, Rex Beach, Robert Service) are still familiar names. Others (newspeople like Tappan Adney, who wrote for Harper. s Illustrated Weekly, and Stroller White, who on one slow news day invented ice worms) have been largely forgotten. (CAN) Momiji is a personal documentary tracing three generations in a Japanese Canadian family, from immigration to internment in British Columbia during the Second World War, to the filmmaker. s own idyllic childhood in a predominantly white Montreal suburb. Using super-8 home movies, archival photos and present-day footage, Momiji explores the sacrifices often made by immigrants and their descendants in order to assimilate. Momiji is not only a story about assimilation, racism and shame, but it is also a story about personal discovery and new-found pride in a heritage long forgotten. Excellent for classroom usage, Momiji raises important questions about cultural identity that should initiate thoughtful discussion about multiculturalism in Canada today.

Where the Oceans Meet is a collection of stories about traditional India and Aboriginals in conflict with the past and the present. The novel looks at various characters. some have been Americanized, and some are still living in the traditional Aboriginal way. The conflicting feelings of the characters fluctuate between a yearning for traditions, that are safe and predictable but that often deny individuality, and a more modern culture where ritual has lost meaning and religious differences are unimportant. The book functions as a story cycle: the characters of one story appear in others, although many do not actually meet or know each other. However, the connections help create a sense of unity. Teachers should note that some of the selections might contain sensitive wording or descriptions.
