Danziger. s sixth book about Amber Brown has the unsinkable Amber coping with the fallout from her parent. s divorce. Although she is very happy that her dad is moving back from Paris, it complicates her life, because now she has to choose with whom she should spend Thanksgiving. Children already familiar with the series know that though Amber. s problems can be tricky and uncomfortable, she can be counted on to sort things out in the end with resilience and basic good sense.

In Arthur. s Chicken Pox, just when Arthur, the infamous aardvark, and his family are preparing for a family excursion to the circus, Arthur contracts that most annoying communicable disease. chicken pox! Although this program does not explain how chicken pox is spread, it does illustrate the symptoms.

In Arthur and the True Francine, Muffy and Francine are the best of friends until Muffy cheats on a math test and lets Francine take the blame.

In order to prove his capabilities, Arthur starts a pet-sitting business. This venture is not at all lucrative, but it does help Arthur to earn his parents. support. This program outlines the care required to look after a dog.

In D.W., the Copycat, D.W. wants to be just like Arthur. Finally, Arthur is able to convince her that the world is only big enough for one of him!

In Sick As a Dog, Arthur feeds his dog, Pal, Hallowe. en candy and Pal becomes ill. Pal has to spend the night at the veterinarian. s clinic until the cause of his illness is determined.

This rhyming book promotes the development of a healthy lifestyle and positive self-concept for children during their early childhood years. Thanks to the generosity of the Telephone Pioneers of America, pending available funding, it can be personalized for each student in 50 instances where information unique to each child is printed. These personal touches include the child. s name and address, two friends. names, one or two teachers. names, the name of the child. s school and its location.

Based on a true story, this picture book approaches a difficult subject in an honest and sensitive way. Mrs. Kempczinski. s Grade 3 class loves everything about its teacher. the stories she tells about her travels and the way she does a special homework dance when the whole class turns in its homework on time. When Mrs. K. is suddenly stricken with cancer and has to miss school, the class writes to her and tries to carry on "in the third-grade way." At the end of the school year, Mrs. K. returns to tell her students how proud she is of their work. The textured watercolour paintings expressively illustrate the characters. personalities and feelings. This is a thoughtful and original effort that will promote discussion.

When his attempts are unsuccessful, he is helped by the Cree, and eventually learns to find happiness and contentment as a mud duck. The Cree text is included in this beautifully illustrated, universal story.

This humourous program was developed to provoke children to question and challenge what they view on television. It encourages viewers to think about the differences between real life and the world as portrayed on television. It also addresses the issue of violence in the media. This is an excellent program to help students develop critical thinking skills relating to media literacy.

(CAN) Told through the voice of a caring doll, this unique story poignantly relates how a nine-year-old girl is physically and verbally abused by two other children who are tenants in her mother. s home. After suffering a loss of spirit, the young girl finally asserts herself and takes action to stop the bullying. The illustrations are done in photographs of Diane Jarvis Jones. meticulously crafted button art. Although this is a valuable resource, it is quite complex and deals with a sensitive issue. Therefore, in order to use it effectively, teacher-guided preparatory and follow-up discussions are recommended.

(CAN) Well-managed themes of family change, relocation and intergenerational and intercultural friendship make this attractive and appealing story a useful tool for helping children to discover the wonders found in the Chinese culture and to come to accept changes in life. When Ian. s parents separate, he moves with his mother from the prairies to the city where he befriends Mr. Mah, an elderly Chinese man, who lives next door. The friendship between the homesick boy and Mr. Mah is realistic and comforting. Illustrations by Janet Wilson help to convey the intimacy and significance of the memories the two friends share.

Mickey is disappointed when he is given the part of a duck for his role in the school drama presentation. With the encouragement of his family and the ingenuity of his sister when his costume is ruined in a rainstorm, Mickey eventually celebrates his participation in the play. The bright watercolours and coloured pencil and black-pen art lend energy to this story about appreciating differences.

Mike Swan, Sink or Swim (Print-Fiction). Heiligman, Deborah and Demarest, Chris, illus. Yearling Bks. (BAN), 1998. 48 p. ISBN 0-440-41435-0 ($5.99 pbk.).

In spite of his fears of alligators in the pool, swimming to China by mistake and especially. drowning, Mike Swan does learn how to swim! However, this feat could not have been accomplished without much support from his father and his best friend. His success is also, in part, a result of a very unconventional incentive involving an unusual combination of foods. Colourful, cartoon-style illustrations by Chris Demarest enhance the light-hearted, simple text in this chapter book for beginning readers.

(CAN) In an entertaining fashion, this timely kit helps students to become informed about Internet safety. It includes a video, two CD-ROMs, a detective's notebook, a poster and a teacher's guide.

The video offers four brief documentaries. Two address the case study of an Internet abduction, while the others demonstrate how teachers and parents can work with children when they play the CD-ROM game.

Based on a true incident, the computer game challenges players to become detectives and help locate a 13-year-old boy named Zack who has been abducted by an Internet predator named Fantasma. Students can record the evidence that they collect in the detective's notebook. At the end of the game, students are asked three questions:

1. Has a crime been committed?

2. If so, what crime?

3. Who can be held responsible?

The answers to these questions are likely to surprise most players.

The 37 cm by 55 cm poster offers three rules to help students protect themselves against Internet crime.

The teacher's guide was developed to assist adults in discussing Internet safety with children. It includes the answers to the computer game.

In September 2000, Saskatchewan Education distributed copies of Missing: An Educational Kit About Internet Kidnapping to Saskatchewan schools. The development of this material was funded by the Mounted Police Foundation and Sask Tel.
